Well we’re two weeks into our 45 day program to lose weight and get in shape for summer and things are going well. Yesterday we changed things up a bit and took our yoga class outdoors. We enlisted the help of Isa over at Tula Sports and took out some paddleboards to change up our routine. I had no idea how hard this was going to be. I’ve paddleboarded and I’ve done yoga but not together. And let me tell you, it’s not easy. In fact, I was so sore later that night on the anchor desk, I had to take a few aspirin to get through the show. Yeah, that bad, I mean, good!
There were five of us: Yoga instructors Courtney and Lacey, Erica, co-owner of Studio Bamboo, Isa, owner of Tula Sports and me. So we put our boards over at Marina Shores in Va. Beach on the Lynnhaven River and off we went. The tide was running hard against us and the wind was blowing in the opposite direction that we wanted to go. If we stopped paddling even for one stroke, we’d drift backwards. We paddled for what seemed like 5 miles upstream (probably on two in reality) and then Isa had us throw some anchors down, finally! By the time we’d reached our quiet little spot, we’d had a major 45-minute cardio workout. Courtney took us through a short Yoga routine with names of poses I still can’t pronounce. If you’ve done any yoga you know those poses are hard enough. But when you try them on a 33-inch wide board in the water, it gets a lot more interesting. By interesting, I mean harder. Half the time I just watched the other girls doing some of the more complicated poses. I’m still new to this stuff and I wanted to stay on the board, especially after I saw a few jellyfish! Yikes! At the end, we did my favorite pose which I did learn the name of this one, Savasana. Oh sweet lord, I was happy to do that one. Its where you just lie on your back and relax and breathe. There we were just lying in the sunshine, on the water, relaxing. Heaven.
It was a great workout for a lot of reasons. We got in cardio, worked out our core by balancing and paddling on the board and stretched with the yoga. So we all agreed we’d be doing this more, possibly once a week. We’ve all been doing our own versions of diet and we each have our own challenges there which I’ll write about next time. We will be weighing in and measuring next week at the halfway point to see how we’re all doing. Stay tuned…… 😉
I don’t know about you, but my issue with staying slim, is not getting to the gym. It’s eating too much! The girls and I have been on this new yoga workout for a week now and we’ve all been dropping pounds! We’re doing it the healthy way with diet and exercise so in 45 days we’ll have changed some bad habits and been more consistent with our workouts.
When it comes to food, I know *what* to eat, I just eat too much of it. At the end of the day, it’s calories in and calories out. But here’s the thing. Like many of you, I’m busy. I’m a working mom who doesn’t have a ton of time to prepare healthy dishes that are perfectly measured out so that I know how many calories I’m wolfing down. That said I want to give Trader Joe’s a big attaboy!! I was in a huge hurry today, having just dropped off my sons at work and I was racing to the TV station. I realized I hadn’t eaten lunch and probably wouldn’t have time to eat once I got to work. As you know *not* eating is nearly as bad as eating too much. It’s well-documented that our metabolism slows down if we don’t eat regularly. So on my way to work, I dropped into Trader Joe’s to possibly pick up some fruit or veggies or something that would be fast and healthy. I knew they had a small section of ready-made food like sandwiches but I had no idea they had delicious salads perfectly portioned and free of artificial junk that doesn’t belong in food. They had so many choices!! I grew to love TJ’s when I lived in Phoenix but I love them even more now. I actually picked up two salads. One was a Thai lime chicken salad with quinoa and the other was a chicken and roasted beet salad with some kind of amazing vinaigrette. They are good-sized salads and less than 300 calories. A whole meal for less than 300 calories! The pleasant lady at the register was so even gave me a plastic fork. Score!
Right now, the girl’s and I are trying not to weigh ourselves because its too early. We’re focusing on getting consistent yoga workouts in (at least 6 days a week) and doing another exercise like running or biking, or in my case today, Insanity with one of my work buddies here at the station.
While all three of us girls are keeping track of our calories and exercise on the app Lose It, we have asked a nutritionist to come in and help us tomorrow to make sure we are maximizing our eating plan to stay healthy and lose an optimal amount of weight and inches. Stay tuned!
Things are going well at “Beach Girls Fit Club.” I’m happy to report that all three of us have lost weight. Just to be clear, we are not tied to the scales because we know that we’ll be losing inches of fat and gaining muscle. But it is nice to see measurable results from all of your hard work. It’s only been 5 days and Ann has lost 3 pounds, Erica has lost 2 pounds and I’ve lost 2 pounds. Yay team!! We’re totally excited and even more motivated.
I did Ann’s 90-minute yoga class this morning at the studio and it kicked my butt! I had heard Erica say that her class was hard so I had to experience it for myself. It did not disappoint. I was dripping with sweat before the midway point and its not *hot* yoga. But now I’m using my breath to create heat and it’s working.
I’ve been keeping track of my calories and exercise with an app called Lose It and I couldn’t believe it when I saw that the app only gave me 150 calories for doing 90 minutes of yoga. The app makers obviously never took Ann’s class. I do like the app because it makes it so easy to add meals and calories so you can see if you’re over or under the number of calories you need to lose the amount of weight you want to lose.
One thing that I think really helps me stave off sugar cravings and keeps my skin healthy is warm lemon water first thing in the morning. Have you tried this? It’s a great way to get your metabolism going and gives you a big does of vitamin C right out of the gate. Before my morning coffee, I squeeze half a lemon in 8-12 ounces of warm water and add a dash of cayenne pepper and then down the hatch! I started adding the cayenne to help control blood pressure and according to many studies, it has so many other health benefits.
Today Ann worked with us on some yoga basics and a big part of that was breathing. We take for granted this thing we do involuntarily, inhaling, exhaling. It comes naturally, right? Apparently I was doing it all wrong! Well that’s an overstatement of course, but I certainly wasn’t maximizing my breath to enable me to move through the yoga poses. And moving through the poses correctly makes all the difference. Without theright breathing, I’m just doing some twisty, funky poses and stretching. When I added some mindful deep breathing, I was breaking a sweat in less than 5 minutes. My body heated up instantly with my breath. Ann also teaches classes to people with medical issues as well as wounded warriors, paraplegics and folks with PTSD. She knows her stuff! And when she showed me how to do the basic poses correctly incorporating deliberate breath, I was shocked at how much difference it made. We did a 15-minute basic yoga routine called sun salutes A and B and it was surprisingly hard. I’m still pretty new to the practice so when the class instructor says get into monkey pose, I’m pretty lost and end up looking silly. Don’t worry, I’ll share those pics later for a good laugh. So to round out today’s workout, Ann led us through also some leg and ab work that are all yoga moves. So in one hour, I was toast.
We’ve been working at this since Tuesday and Ann is the big winner so far. She has lost 3 pounds! Erica and I haven’t lost any weight and we were a little bummed about it but we know the weight and inches will eventually catch up to our hard work. Tomorrow, I’ll tell you the two things I’m doing that help curb my appetite, give me energy and will eventually help me shed some pounds. Stay tuned:)
Ok, how many of you put on a bathing suit this year and gasped when you looked in the mirror? Well I did. This momma bear put on some hibernation weight over the Winter and now I’d prefer to wear the cover-up and not the suit. After talking to my friends, Ann and Erica, I realized we were all in the same boat. None of us is overweight by most standards but we are not at our personal best. So Ann has put us on a program to slim down and tighten up! The main part of our workout is yoga and yoga-related calisthenics. It’s amazing how hard it can be lift your own body weight. So here’s the basic plan. We are doing a 15 minute yoga routine and then Ann takes us through a variety of exercises to strengthen and tone. I’ll be detailing all of these exercises in this blog as we go along as well as some pics so you can follow along if you like. So basically, 45-minutes of yoga/strength work and we all do our own versions of cardio for about an hour a day, biking or running. This routine is 6 days a week. In my next post, I’ll talk about what we’re eating and what app we’re using to keep track of calories. Stay tuned…..
